Together we can Create the Vision

Annual Report Released.
Residents of Washington Township and Centerville share the same schools, the same friends and the same community. Now their two local governments – Washington Township and Centerville – share the same community vision they call Create the Vision.

At a joint meeting in June 2004, the two governments adopted a single Community Plan that provides a blueprint for growth and redevelopment over the next 20 years. The plan addresses a wide variety of issues including land use, transportation, parks and recreation, community services, utilities, economic development, community appearance, and education and learning. Members of the citizen-based Create the Vision Steering Committee worked 18 months to prepare the plan. Their research included a series of public meetings where hundreds of community members shared their vision for our community.

Since the plan’s approval, a 17-member team of citizens has been appointed to the Implementation Task Force. This task force includes two elected officials, who serve as Co-Chairs; Brooks Compton, a Centerville City Councilman, and Tom Zobrist, the Clerk Treasurer for Washington Township. Together, they will monitor implementation of the plan’s eight goals, nine study areas, 51 objectives and 198 strategies.

To mark the first anniversary, Montgomery County Commissioners presented members of the Implementation Task Force with a proclamation during their meeting on June 28, 2005.

Heading the list of Create the Vision’s significant accomplishments is the appointment of a Project Manager, Angie Tapogna, and the appointment of a consultant — ACP-Visioning & Planning Ltd. Of Columbus — to draft a Unified Development Code. For Centerville, ACP is working on both commercial and residential zoning regulations. In Washington Township, ACP is working on commercial zoning regulations with the creation of conservation districts. ACP served as consultant to the 18-month planning process that guided the planning process for the community plan.

One of the roles of the Implementation Task Force is to identify cooperative ventures that impact the quality of life for residents in Centerville and Washington Township and determine the resources needed to implement them.

The entities that have worked together to implement the several cooperative ventures include the City of Centerville, Washington Township, Centerville City School District, Centerville-Washington Park District, Washington Centerville Public Library, Hithergreen Senior Center and the Centerville-Washington Township Historical Society.
